Progress 2009

2009 was a busy year for the Stirling Alliance team. We launched into the year tackling one of our most 'wicked' problems - the Long Term Transport Plan. Trying to meet the needs of both the land-use planning outcomes and the regional and local transport needs was a complex issue that had defied resolution for some time. Working with the community and a range of government and private sector professionals, we employed an innovative blend of problem-solving and decision-making processes to arrive at an agreed and workable outcome. We are now seeing detailed designs being developed around these outcomes.

Then of course there was the Festival of Ideas, an extensive precinct planning exercise that brought a range of stakeholders and professionals together over a week long event. The outcomes of this exercise have formed the basis of detailed discussions in precincts 5 and 7, with more detailed planning scheduled for 2010.

Another highlight of 2009 was the opening of the new project office at 369 Scarborough Beach Road, Innaloo. These beautiful new offices, provided by the City of Stirling, were opened by the Premier in August, amongst a star studded audience of State and Local Government elected members and Alliance staff and friends. The office has since become a focal point for community and staff alike, being ideally situated at the 'coalface', with an open door policy that encourages community involvement.

The latter part of the year has seen the project team working hard to put together a business case that will be presented to Cabinet early in 2010. This submission outlines the opportunities that exist in Stirling to develop a vibrant city centre that offers diverse economic and social benefits on a local and regional scale. This Cabinet decision is crucial to the continuing success of the Stirling Alliance.

Along with all these milestones, a number of working groups have been diligently working away to examine innovative approaches to water and energy provision and management, social and economic strategies, delivery mechanisms and stakeholder engagement. We look forward in the new year to bring our learning together in a Structure Plan that sets the framework for a sustainable city centre that is a fabulous place to live, work and play.
